In this course we will primarily be focusing on data produced by multispectral radiometers mounted on satellites measuring the spatial variations in the reflected/radiated EMR from the Earth’s surface and we will focus on how to use remote sensing data within the context of understanding the physical environment of the earths surface. The use of  Remote Sensing can be seen as example of what Jim Gray called the fourth science paradigm namely “Data-Intensive Scientific Discovery” or eScience see the book “The Fourth Paradigm”.  One of the main issues of “Data-intensive Scientific Discovery”, especially within Earth science is the vast amount of data involved. In this course we will try to cope with this issue by utilizing googles dedicated cloud platform for “planetary-scale Earth science data & analysis” named Google Earth Engine.
