Metadata is often the last thing people do when working with geospatial data, but this is wrong. Metadata should be the starting point for any geospatial project, whether it is a project that creates or consumes GeoSpatial data

One of the key uses of metadata is making the data discoverable in data portals (read about data portals here). Most data portals use one of the following taxonomies to describe the data.
